  • BPO and IT booming in Cebu

The business environment in Cebu is indeed becoming more conducive for BPO and IT companies.  After the city ranked among the world’s Top Ten Emerged BPO Cities, more efforts are coming from the business sectors to maintain the city’s place in the global BPO industry.

Last November 16, 2010, the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (CEDF-IT) organized the “Getting Started in Your IT/BPO Business” summit with the Small and Business Enterprises (SME) of Cebu.  The event discussed which areas the SMEs must focus on to bolster their involvement in the city’s booming BPO sector.

“There are actually a lot of opportunities in the BPO and IT industry.  It just depends on what kind of sector they want to enter. You don’t need much capital. You don’t need to hire many employees on the spot. You may even start with employing five employees but what SMEs should consider is the pool of talent in the business,” Business Process Association of the Philippines Director for Executive Affairs Raymond Lacdao said.

Among the attendees was PODD, the only game and applications development company in Visayas and Mindanao.  The Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), a non-stock non-profit organization of local and foreign game development studios in the country, was also one of the participants.  Both PODD and GDAP were represented by PODD CEO Christine Rom, who was also a panelist during The Challenges & Opportunities of Business Process Outsourcing forum.

Lacdao further emphasized that instead of focusing on gaining more startup capital for a BPO business, SMEs that consider getting into the industry must first strengthen their human resources.  “We just have to continue producing the best talent pool and render good customer service to clients,” Lacdao added.

In response to BPAP’s call to the consortium to invest primarily on the skills and experience of their workforce, the SMEs in the BPO and IT industries of Cebu, including PODD, attested to consistently recruit and train world-class talents.

“Getting Started Into Your IT/BPO Business” was held at the City Sports Club in Cebu Business Park.  It was hosted by CEDF-IT, an association of enterprises, schools, government offices and NGOs that aim to improve the quality and quantity of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and IT-Enabled Services Industry professionals in the city.  Various companies such as Activeone Health, Audio Dicta Transcription Corp, G2iX, Nextix Systems, Ascendant Technologies, Primary Software, Alliance Software, Human Capital and Visaya KPO were also represented during the program.
