• Twitter, Facebook and others a big factor on Google’s real-time SERPs Posted by Cherie at 9:35 am in Online Marketing  | February 12, 2010

Years ago, Google envisioned real-time search results in their search engine results pages (SERPs). And just December of last year, Google finally achieved such goal.

Early December, Google announced that their SERPs would now be showing results in real-time. Whatever a person searches through Google, their SERPs would show the latest news and other related blog posts. Users could also view the hottest or commonly viewed topics for easier access. With this, Google tapped social media sites to help them get better real-time search results.

    How does this work?

It’s simple. Google would now consider Tweets, posts, and other feeds that come from Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, MySpace, Jaiku and Identi.ca. Of course, Google regulates this. It surely not includes tweet, posts and feeds just for the sake of posting them through the net or to get through Google’s SERPs. Google only considers those with relevant content. To see search results that you think is more important and more relevant, Google gives you an option to filter just the feeds of either of the social media sites. This also applies to iPhone and Android devices to see the latest results when on the go.

    Wouldn’t this be SPAMmy?

The social media sites are highly accessible, and now that they’re a big factor on Google’s search results, people could abuse this to get higher page rank. But Google’s Vice President of Search Products and User Experience Marissa Mayer said that they can’t just simply apply page rank algorithm to any content that has been share in real-time.

With Google’s integration of real-time feeds in search engine results, this is one thing that people would be keeping an eye on. They could look at the advantages that it brought to them or the flaws that could harm them. Either ways, both parties (Google and the users) have a responsibility to make the results at least spam-free.
